Ten Reasons For Not Accepting A Counter-Offer

Ok, you got the job! Great! The only thing barring you from the best job of your life is the fact that you know that when you give your notice, your current employer may want you to stay. You’re tempted. After all, you’ve put in a lot of time and energy into making a name for yourself in that company. Here are ten good reasons not to accept:

  1. What kind of company do you work for if you have to threaten to resign before they give you what you are worth? Most companies pay their employees fair market value for the work expected of them, their background, education and years with their organization.  If you have to threaten to resign, chances are you will never be compensated fairly without having to constantly threaten to leave.
  2. Where is the money for the counter offer coming from? Is it your next raise early? Most companies have strict wage and salary guidelines which must be followed.
  3. Your company will immediately start looking for a new person at a cheaper price. You are now costing the company more than their budget allows for your position.  In most cases, employers will counter you to remain with their company while they look for a new employee.  This generally gives employers more than your two week notice to find your replacement.  This is called the “band-aid fix”.
  4. You have now made your employer aware that you are unhappy. From this day on, your loyalty will always be in question.  You were once willing to leave the company but remained only because you were given more money.  Right or wrong – that is how the payoff to remain is viewed.
  5. When promotion time comes around, your employer will remember who was loyal and who wasn’t.  Additionally, with your newly received monetary increase, you might have worked yourself out of a promotion because of your new salary.
  6. When times get tough, you employer will begin the cutback with you.  You were willing to leave at one point and time and remained because of money or monetary gains.  Your position more often than not becomes one that is reduced and the company can gain back their loss.
  7. The same circumstances that have caused you to consider a change will repeat themselves in the future even if you accept a counter offer now.  Money does not resolve most issues.  Remember the reasons you were looking to make a career change in the first place.
  8. Statistics show that if you accept a counter offer, the probability of voluntarily leaving in six months or being let go within one year is extremely high.  The number one reason is obvious – the money or promotion received in the counter offer did not change the original reason people began a job search.
  9. Accepting a counter offer is an insult to your intelligence and a blow to your personal pride – knowing that you have been bought.
  10. Once the word gets out, the relationship that you now enjoy with your co-workers will never be the same. You will lose the personal satisfaction of peer group acceptance.
